Media Firon Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman continues to focus on financial interest than editorial interests

The so-called popular Pakistani channel GEO TV went off-air in most parts of the country. It was later restored with similar assumptions and rumors about a deal with the establishment in the revival. However, there was much more behind the mysterious recovery of the channel.

Since the apex court started the trial of the Sharif family in the Panama Papers case, GEO television had been airing controversial commentary against the judiciary.

Mir Shakil ur Rahman, the owner of the channel once said that managing a media group was a business for him, calling upon the reporters, he was facing, to ‘forget about journalism’, is an indication of what mattered most to him.

It was also reported that the channel had not paid its staff for several months. According to an unconfirmed list uploaded on social media, the government of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) handed over 430 million rupees to GEO TV from 2013 till 2016.

The same TV channel had also been in a constant fight with the then opposition party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Jang and The News were also involved in controversial campaigns against the new Prime Minister Imran Khan.
