We consume various harmful foods on an everyday basis without realizing the adverse effects it has on our health. These foods play a major role in weight gain and the development of serious illnesses.

Following is a list of Healthy Foods that people think are nutritious but are actually not.

  1. Manufactured ‘low-fat’ foods

Once the fat has been removed from foods, the taste doesn’t remain the same anymore. Therefore, a big amount of sugar is added to the foods to compensate for the taste. The consumption of excess sugar is extremely harmful which is why these processed foods should not be consumed on a daily basis.

There is a misconception of fruit juices being healthy but those are just chemicals that are made to taste like fruit. The necessary nutrition like fiber is taken out so what we drink as ‘fruit juice’ is basically just fruit-flavored sugar water.

Most wheat products aren’t really made from whole wheat. The grains are crushed into fine flour. When consumed it causes the blood sugar levels to rise.

People who have a low or no tolerance for gluten cannot consumer ‘modern wheat’ as it may cause inflammation and increased cholesterol levels.

    Phytosterols

Phytosterols are nutrients that are found in the cell membrane of plants and function to lower cholesterol levels in humans. Despite this advantage of Healthy Foods studies have shown that phytosterols have an adverse effect on the cardiovascular system and may increase the risk of heart disease.

    Margarine

Because butter is labeled as a high saturated fat content food, health experts promote margarine instead. Although it has fewer trans fats, it is still loaded with refined vegetable oils. The Framingham Heart Study showed that consumption of margarine can more likely cause heart diseases.

    Sports drinks

These drinks contain electrolytes and sugar which are useful for athletes but most people don’t need additional salts or liquid sugar in their diet. Substituting these drinks with water is sufficient.

    Low-carb foods

Studies have confirmed that low-carb diets are an effective way to lose weight and improve one’s health. As a result, food processors brought in various low carb foods to the market. These foods are high in chemicals and highly refined ingredients. They don’t nourish the body and are still considered unhealthy.

    Gluten-free junk foods

Food manufacturers sell all sorts of gluten-free foods to the market as it has become a typical marketing buzz. These foods have the same negative effects on the body as their gluten-containing counterparts. These highly processed foods contain few nutrients and are often made with refined flour which can lead to increased blood sugar levels.

    Processed breakfast cereals

The ‘whole grain’ and ‘low fat’ claims that these cereals have on their boxes are misleading as they contain refined grains, sugar, and artificial chemicals.
