Hiccups are sudden, involuntary contractions of the diaphragm muscle. When the muscle spasms, the vocal cords snap shut, producing the hiccup sound. These sounds are often rhythmic and usually a temporary minor annoyance, but prolonged sounds may signal a major medical problem.

Also, we have a few myths related to Hiccups and that’s when you get hiccups, someone is missing you very much or when you get hiccups, someone is talking bad about you somewhere.

Seems funny, isn’t it? Because in reality “Hics doesn’t mean that someone is desperately missing you” or “Someone is talking bad about you”. IT IS ALL CREATED.

However, Hiccups can be really annoying and here we need to learn how to control these disturbing sounds.

Below are a few tricks and remedies to put an end to your hiccup:

Press your hand

Press the palm of your hand with the thumb of your other hand really hard. You can also press the ball of your thumb with your other thumb and forefinger. This pressure will distract you and your nervous system.

Honey and Castor oil

Mix 1 tsp honey with 1 tsp castor oil and taste this mix once by dipping your finger in this. Do this 2-3 times. This is an effective Ayurvedic remedy to get rid of your hiccups.

Lemon wedge

It is quite effective to stop your hiccups. Lightly suck on a lemon wedge to instantly put an end to your endless hiccups.

Calm your nerve endings

Press the soft area behind your ears lightly to calm your vagus nerve. You can also stick your fingers in your ears or put your hands over your ears.

Sit and hug your knees

Sit down and then bring your knees near your chest and hug them. This calms the diaphragm which helps in stopping the hic hics.

Some more Facts about Hiccups:

  1. It occurs in almost all mammals. (Fetuses inside the womb also get hiccups)
  2. These sounds don’t really last long but if they do then it is a serious sign of major health problem. Especially, if they last for more than 48 hours then some serious problems could be there.
  3. Sometimes holding the breath, counting 1-10 and putting sugar under the tongue help to disappear the hiccups.
  4. Many continuously drink water but doing so actually increases the level of acidity.
