Aung San Suu Kyi, the ousted Myanmar leader, appeared in a military court on Thursday after being confined when Covid-19 was discovered among her aides, according to a source familiar with her case.

Last year, the 76-year-civilian old’s administration was deposed in a coup that sparked enormous protests, and she now faces a slew of charges that could land her in prison for more than 150 years.

Suu Kyi was placed in quarantine last week after Covid was discovered among her employees. She is currently on trial for alleged corruption, breaching Myanmar’s official secrets legislation, and manipulating the election commission.

According to a source familiar with the situation, she “came before the district judge” for her official secrets act trial in a special court in the military-built capital Naypyidaw on Thursday.

Suu Kyi is charged alongside Australian economist Sean Turnell, who was detained in the days after the February coup.

The maximum penalty for this crime is 14 years in jail.

Since being placed into military detention, Suu Kyi and her personal staff have been properly vaccinated against Covid-19, according to her lawyer, who spoke to AFP last July.

She missed a hearing in September owing to sickness, and her counsel claimed in October that her health had deteriorated as a result of her numerous appearances in front of the junta-run court.

Journalists are not allowed to attend the hearings, and her lawyers are not allowed to speak to the press.

Suu Kyi has already been sentenced to six years in prison for inciting against the military, violating Covid-19 regulations, and violating a telecommunications legislation, though she is still under house arrest pending the outcome of her other accusations.
