Catalonia protests turn violent, a large crowd clashed with police
A unity rally was staged with protests against the conviction of separatist leaders in Catalonia, city of Barcelona. Three and a half million people shouted slogans in favor of unity.
According to Western media, separatists and allies are facing freedom protests in Spain’s sovereign state of Catalonia.
The demonstration, organized by Societal Civil Catalana, an umbrella group of political parties and civic bodies that want Catalonia to remain part of Spain, was attended by about 80,000 people, according to local police, although SCC put the attendance at 400,000.
The demonstration on Saturday was peaceful, it was followed by further violent scenes overnight as a crowd of about 10,000 people clashed with police, throwing bottles and balls at officers.
Tens of thousands of demonstrators carried Spanish and Catalan flags and placards that read “We are Catalans too” as they marched down Passeig de Gràcia, the scene of some of the worst rioting last week.
Supporters of an independent Catalonia have been demonstrating almost daily, sometimes violently, since Spain’s Supreme Court jailed nine Catalan secessionist leaders for their roles in the region’s illegal independence referendum in 2017.
It should be noted that after the Spanish Supreme Court sentenced the nine-year-old prisoner to Catalonia’s neoliberal paths, there have been violent clashes between police and the public in Catalonia and the situation is still worsen.
Catalonia was an independent state near the beaches in the southeastern part of Europe.
It was invaded in 1707 and annexed to Spain and made a new state, while its language, culture, mortgage were all separated.
