U.S. to announce withdrawal of 4,000 troops from Afghanistan

The United States will announce the withdrawal of about 4,000 troops from Afghanistan later this week.

According to US media reports, talks between the United States and the Afghan Taliban resumed a week ago while the parties sought a way to reduce violence or even reach a ceasefire.

The reports further stated that Washington has stopped from making that announcement on Thursday in a wake of an attack by a militant group near a major US air base in the north of Kabul that killed two civilians and injured dozens.

There are currently 13,000 US troops in Afghanistan. Former US officials say the Trump administration plans to announce the withdrawal of 4,000 troops from Afghanistan.

Taliban attack kills 25 Afghan soldiers

Earlier this month, The United States has restarted peace talks with the Taliban in Qatar after three months halt.

US peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad held the first official talks with the Afghan Taliban in Qatar’s capital, Doha.

Three month before US. President Donald Trump had abruptly halted peace talks and all the diplomatic efforts that could end the America’s longest war, now the talks has been resumed where I was ended.

On September 7, the US President Donald Trump had called off a secret summit with the Taliban and Afghanistan’s leader and said that abruptly slamming the door on a year of diplomacy to end America’s longest war.

Trump said that he had planned unprecedented, albeit separate, talks with the two sides Sunday in Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland, but that the Taliban’s persistent, grisly campaign of violence made them untrustworthy partners.

“Unbeknownst to almost everyone, the major Taliban leaders and, separately, the President of Afghanistan, were going to secretly meet with me at Camp David on Sunday,” Trump said in a tweet.

He further wrote “Unfortunately, in order to build false leverage, they admitted to an attack in Kabul that killed one of our great soldiers, and 11 other people. I immediately cancelled the meeting and called off peace negotiations.”

“What kind of people would kill so many in order to seemingly strengthen their bargaining position? They didn’t, they only made it worse!” Trump said.
