The former French prime minister and his wife have been sentenced to life in prison and fined in a fake job case.
According to the foreign media, a French court has sentenced former Prime Minister François Fillon and his wife to imprisonment and fines on charges of fraud and damaging public funds.
The former prime minister was accused of showing his wife as his parliamentary aide as a Member of Parliament from 1990 to 2000, in return for which his wife was paid millions of euros from the state coffers, even though his wife never worked as an assistant.
The court sentenced François Fillon a to five years in prison and a fine of 400,000 euros on his conviction, disqualifying him from holding any elected public office for the next 10 years.
The court also sentenced his wife to three years in prison and a fine of 1.5 million euros.
François Fillon, 66, is one of France’s most senior politicians, having served as prime minister from 2007 to 2012.
He was a leading candidate in the 2017 presidential election, but his campaign failed miserably after the scandal broke.
