The US is going to impose visa restrictions on Chinese Communists party officials as they are believed to be accountable for undermining freedoms in Hong Kong.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that “current and former” party officials have been targeted with the sanctions.

He said that the decision of visa restrictions has been taken after President Donald Trump pledged to punish Beijing over a proposed security law that could affect Hong Kong’s independence.

China said that the US’s decision was a “mistake” and it should be withdrawn.

The announcement comes before a meeting of China’s parliament. The Standing Committee is likely to discuss the new measure at the meeting that will begin on Sunday.

According to the International news agency, China has imposed security laws that would make it a crime to undermine China’s rights in Hong Kong, and could also vision China installing its security agencies in the territory for the first time.

Mr. Pompeo’s statement came after the US Senate voted to impose sanctions on people who undermine Hong Kong’s independence as well as the banks that do business with them.

On the other hand, the Chinese Embassy responded and said that it “firmly opposes the US side’s wrongful decisions”.

In a statement posted on Twitter, the embassy added: “We urge the US side to immediately correct its mistakes, withdraw the decision and stop interfering in China’s domestic affairs.”
