Universities Challenged Trump’s decision to Withdraw Visas For Foreign Students

Leading US educational institutions have filed a lawsuit in federal court against President Donald Trump’s decision that international students who take online classes will not be able to stay in the United States.

Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology filed the lawsuit in federal court in Boston, according to the reports.

The petition seeks to prevent federal immigration officials from enforcing the law.

American universities have argued that the Trump administration’s directives violate the Administrative Procedures Act because they have failed to justify the policy and the public has not been given the notice to comment.

The Trump administration has not yet commented on the lawsuit filed by American universities.

Harvard University said the Trump administration’s decision would bar 5,000 Harvard international students from living in the United States.

Harvard President Lawrence Baku said the order came without notice.

It should be noted that US officials said yesterday that due to the Coronavirus crisis, all foreign students taking online classes will not be allowed to stay in the country.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a statement that students from foreign countries will not be permitted to stay in the US this autumn if their universities have moved classes fully online

Following Trump’s decision, Senator Bernie Sanders tweeted, “The cruelty of this White House knows no bounds. Foreign students are being threatened with a choice: risk your life going to class in-person or get deported. We must stand up to Trump’s bigotry. We must keep all our students safe.”

It should be noted that the United States is the most affected country in the world by the coronavirus, where so far more than 130,000 people have died from the virus.

While crackdowns on immigration are a major US issue, Trump has taken a particularly hard line on foreigners since the start of the health crisis.

In June, he froze the issuance of green cards until 2021, offering permanent U.S. residency.
