A migrant woman, who was diagnosed with Covid-19, gave birth on board a helicopter while being airlifted to the hospital.
She gave birth while being airlifted to a hospital from an over-crowded holding center on Italy’s Lampedusa Island.
According to the international news agency, the woman had contracted coronavirus when she went into labor.
Reuters reported that she was being housed at a migrant holding center that was around 10 times more capacious.
Officials reported that they decided to take her toa hospital in the Sicilian capital of Palermo so she may give birth safely. The hospital was a one-hour flight away. However, she gave birth in the helicopter. She is now n hospital in Palermo along with her baby.
Italy has seen an increase in migrant arrivals this year.
Officials had granted permission to a rescue ship on Tuesday to disembark 353 rescued migrants on the island of Sicily after calls from the United Nations.
The commercial vessel, Maersk Etienne, says it rescued the migrants following a request by Malta in early August but has since been left at sea. Its crew says they are “desperate”.
