Thousands of citizens in Israel have taken to the streets to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Demonstrators claimed that the PM is unfit to rule while on trial for corruption charges. They also accused him of poorly handling the response to the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the local news agency, protesters demonstrated on Saturday at hundreds of locations across Israel due to nationwide lockdown. People are only allowed to gather within one kilometer of their home, as per their current lockdown rules.
The largest gathering took place at Habima Square in central Tel Aviv. Protesters were seen blowing horns and pounded on drums and tambourines. Some of the banners mentioned, “Bibi, you are destroying my future.” Others read “Go!”
Clashes between police and protesters took place in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Police arrested at least four for breaching barriers.
“Disturbers of the peace clashed with officers who were standing at barriers and attacked them while throwing objects at them. A number of officers were injured and treated at the scene,” police were quoted as saying by Haaretz.
Note that Benjamin Netanyahu is facing trial for fraud, breach of trust, and accepting bribes for his role in a series of scandals. Netanyahu has denied the charges and accuses the protesters of being “leftists” and “anarchists”.
