Kuwait’s new Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah on Wednesday has named Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as Crown Prince.
According to Reuters news agency, Two members of Kuwait’s ruling Al Sabah family on Wednesday pledged support for Sheikh Meshal.
Sheikh Meshal has served Kuwait as the deputy chief of the National Guard. Diplomats and Kuwait experts see him as the top contender for the position. Sheikh Meshal is a brother of the late emir who died last Tuesday.
Kuwait’s parliament must approve the choice.
After the death of Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah on Tuesday, the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah was named the new Kuwait’s emir by the country’s cabinet to succeed after his brother.
The announcement of the cabinet was read out on the state television. Under the Gulf Arab State’s constitution, the Crown Prince automatically becomes the new emir of Kuwait and will have all the powers after taking an oath in the parliament.
