Five Chinese agents have been arrested in the United States for allegedly targeting opponents of the Chinese government.

According to the French news agency, US officials have confirmed that five Chinese agents have been arrested on charges of targeting opponents of the Chinese government.

US Assistant Attorney General John C. Demers said eight people had been charged with being part of China’s “Fox Hunt” illegal law enforcement operation.

He said China calls Operation Fox Hunt an international anti-corruption campaign in which Chinese expatriates accused of corruption are arrested, brought back to China and prosecuted.

Demers added that the anti-corruption campaign has targeted mostly those who are opponents and critics of China’s ruling Communist Party and President Xi Jinping.

He said that in any case, China’s operation was against the rule of law and international law.

Demers said five Chinese agents have been arrested in the United States on the same charges, while three others are currently in China.

According to Demers, the men have been charged in the United States with illegally working as agents for China.

“Operation Fox Hunt is just one of many ways in which China disregards the rule of law,” Demers said.

“We have turned the PRC’s Operation Fox Hunt on its head. The hunters became the hunted, the pursuers pursued,” Demers added, adding that the United States response was unambiguous.

“For those charged in China and others engaged in this type of conduct, our message is clear: Stay out. Your behaviour is not welcome here,” Demers said.
