Leading young stand up comedian Munawar Faruqui has been jailed for nearly a month suspected for cracking jokes on Hindu deities.
The High Court of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh has rejected the bail plea of young comedian Munawar Faruqui, saying it appeared that the accused had insulted a particular class by insulting religion. Munawar Faruqui was arrested on January 2 and has been in jail ever since.
High Court Judge Rohit Arya said that the evidence collected so far in connection with the case showed that an attempt was made to injure the religious sentiments of a certain section of the people of India.
The judge said that It appears that the petitioner, under the guise of a ‘stand-up’ comedy show for commercial purposes in a public place, deliberately used vulgar words to offend the religious sentiments of a class.
The judge also said that a complaint has been lodged against the petitioner and his other accomplices for posting insulting posts on social media against Hindu deities like Lord Rama and Sita and the petitioner has not denied it.

Surprisingly, his program did not even begin when police raided and arrested him and five of his accomplices. Eklavia Singh, the son of a local leader of the ruling BJP, had lodged a complaint with the police and vandalized his program before it even started. Singh is also the head of Hindu Raksha, a hardline local Hindu organization.
A case was registered against Faruqui for inciting religious sentiments and mocking Home Minister Amit Shah and then the lower court rejected his bail application on the same grounds. His lawyer had approached the High Court and now the High Court The court also rejected his bail.
In this case, the police have said on record that they do not have any evidence to prove that Faruqi hurt religious feelings. But Eklavia Singh told the court that he had heard Faruqui rehearsing before the show that he was making fun of Hindu gods and goddesses.
The judge did not grant bail on the basis of the testimony of the complainant. During the discussion, the defense counsel said that when Faruqui was not shown, then how did he commit these crimes? The judge said that from the words of the witness, it seems that he did so and now the matter is being investigated. to be continued.
During the same trial last week, Judge Rohit Arya had asked the defense counsel why he did not withdraw his bail application. The judge asked Faruqui’s lawyer, “But why do you want to take advantage of the other’s religious feelings and emotions?” Why do you have such a wrong mentality? How can you do this for business? ”
Earlier in the day, several leading figures in the country reacted by calling Farooqi’s arrest wrong. Former Home Minister P. Chidambaram had recently said that when the police themselves have said that they have no evidence against him, then why an artist is in jail.
