“I have declared a major incident in London because the threat this virus poses to our city is at crisis point. One in 30 Londoners now has COVID-19. If we do not take immediate action now, our NHS could be overwhelmed and more people will die.”

Sadiq Khan’s statement has spread like wildfire in the UK. Based on the latest figures from Public Health England, the prevalence of coronavirus in London has risen sharply, according to the British Office for National Statistics.

It is estimated that one in 30 people in London is infected with the coronavirus. Sadiq Khan told the BBC’s political correspondent Carl Mercer that in some parts of London the number was 1 in 20.
