A new voting law has been introduced in the state of Georgia. But President Joe Biden has called it an ‘atrocity’.
As per the details, Biden has compared the law to racist policies of the 20th Century American South. He said the law adds restrictions to voting and disproportionately targeted black Americans.
In a statement, he mentioned, “Recount after recount and court case after court case upheld the integrity and outcome of a clearly free, fair, and secure democratic process,”
He explained the new law, “This is Jim Crow in the 21st Century. It must end.”
According to the international news agency, Jim Crow means the 19th and 20th Century laws that enforced racial segregation in the US South.
What is the new law?
The international news agency explained that the new voter identification requirements are included for absentee ballots and a limit on the use of ballot drop boxes as it will make it easier to vote.
Moreover, providing food and water to people queuing to vote has been called a crime in the law.
Biden stated, “Instead of celebrating the rights of all Georgians to vote or winning campaigns on the merits of their ideas, Republicans in the state instead rushed through an un-American law to deny people the right to vote,”
“This law, like so many others being pursued by Republicans in statehouses across the country is a blatant attack on the Constitution and good conscience.”
