A four-nation diplomatic alliance comprising the United States, Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan has been formed to help move the peace process forward in the wake of the post-May 15 situations in Afghanistan.

A statement issued by Pakistan’s Foreign Office on Friday said, “In the context of the Afghan peace process and the situation after July 15, 2021, the United States, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan have announced a supportive alliance for regional cooperation.”

“Representatives of the United States, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan have agreed in principle to create a new four-member diplomatic platform that will focus on enhancing regional coordination,” the spokesman said.

According to the Foreign Office, “the parties believe that lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan is essential for regional engagement.”
“Recognizing the historic opportunity to expand international trade, the two sides intend to work together to expand trade, build corridors and strengthen business ties,” the statement said.

The Foreign Office said in a statement that “the two sides have agreed to meet in the coming months to work out the modalities of this alliance by mutual consent.”

“Today, we announced a new diplomatic platform to help strengthen economic connectivity across the region. We look forward to partnering with Afghanistan, Pakistan & Uzbekistan to enhance regional cooperation, a cornerstone to a sustained peace.”

Yesterday, Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan, held a meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani at the sidelines of the Central and South Asia 2021 conference.

PM Imran Khan and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani are leading their respective delegations in the talks during the meeting.

Director-General Inter-Services Intelligence (DG-ISI) Lieutenant General Faiz also attended the talks.

“Pakistan hosts more than 3 million Afghan Refugees, does not have a capacity for more,” the premier said.

He further said that turbulence in Afghanistan is the last thing we want.
