Iran begins air defense drills in central region: report
TEHRAN: Iran’s armed forces on Tuesday started large-scale air defense drills in the central desert region of the country, Tasnim news agency reported.
Units from the army as well as the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) have participated in the exercise, codenamed Guardians of Velayat Sky 1400.
According to the Iranian military officials, the exercise is aimed at improving combat preparedness to strengthen deterrent power, evaluate homegrown air defense systems in countering various threats, and practice action against electronic warfare and cyberattacks, according to the report.
Besides, the drills seek to boost coordination among the army and the IRGC’s command and control centres.
Modern technologies, smart ammunition, cruise missiles, as well as drones and stealth aircraft are employed in the drills.
Also, “various types of homegrown missile systems, radars, electronic warfare equipment, and communication systems are present to practice countering aerial threats in low, medium and high altitudes,” said the report.
The ongoing exercise is a part of Iran’s annual program to enhance capabilities to defend the country’s airspace.
