THE US HAS PROMISED TO DEFEND SOUTH KOREA WITH THE “STRONGEST POSSIBLE DETERRENT” AGAINST ITS NEIGHBORS ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE BORDER.

On Monday, US officials, including a nuclear envoy, arrived in Seoul to discuss North Korea’s “escalators” behavior. This comes after North Korea conducted a test firing of a new weapon system under the supervision of leader Kim Jong-un, state media reported. US Special Representative Sung Kim issued an unequivocal warning that the US will not tolerate any additional threats of this nature.

He told reporters: “It is extremely important for the United Nations Security Council to send a clear signal to the DPRK that we will not accept its escalators tests as normal.

“We agreed on the need to maintain the strongest possible joint deterrent capability on the peninsula.”

The acronym DPRK stands for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, which is North Korea’s official name.

Mr. Kim added that the US would “respond responsibly and decisively to provocative behavior”, explaining that the country is ready to react “anywhere without any conditions”.

North Korea’s recent missile test was allegedly a “new-type tactical guided weapon”.

The official Korean Central News Agency reported on Sunday that the test was “of great significance in drastically improving the firepower of the frontline long-range artillery units and enhancing the efficiency in the operation of tactical nukes”.

According to South Korea’s military, both missiles were fired into the sea on Saturday evening from the North’s Hamhung coastal region.

They traveled nearly 70 miles at an altitude of 80,000 feet and a speed of less than Mach 4 or 3,044 mph, according to satellite images.

A shorter-range missile would bolster North Korea’s ability to attack South Korean cities and American military bases in Asia.

Duyeon Kim, the senior analyst at the Center for a New American Security in Washington, stated:  “One reason for the political timing could be to protest anticipated U.S.-South Korea military drills.
