China has issued a warning to the United States about Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

According to an International news website, news agencies in Japan and Taiwan announced on Thursday that Pelosi would visit Taiwan in the near future.

If she goes, it will be the first time the Speaker of the House has visited the democratically run island since 1997.

The reports have not been confirmed by Pelosi’s office or Taiwanese officials, but China has condemned the suggestion.

“If the US insists on having its way, China will respond by taking serious measures to protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity.” According to a foreign news outlet, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said, “All possible consequences that come from this will be totally faced by the US side.”

China opposes all formal interaction between the US and Taiwan, according to Lijian, because Beijing claims sovereignty over the island. Taipei, on the other hand, disputes this assertion and has ruled the island separately from the mainland for decades.

Concerns have lately been expressed concerning China’s posture on Taiwan in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which some have suggested may lead China to invade Taiwan militarily.

One of the few subjects in Washington that draws Democratic and Republican politicians together is support for Taiwan and opposition to China.

A bill proposed in the House of Representatives on Wednesday would penalize China for any threats or actions against Taiwan.

“The situation in Ukraine is a direct result of poor leadership and a lack of true Russian deterrence.” Regarding a similar bill he introduced in the Senate, Sen. Kevin Cramer said, “Taiwan is a friend, a good trading partner, and a beacon of freedom and democracy.”

“Our law threatens crushing financial sanctions as a deterrent to China seeking to follow in the footsteps of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin on Taiwan,” he continued.
