A dolphin that washed up on a Florida beach was discovered to have been stabbed to death in a horrible marine murder that wildlife officials are now investigating.

Late last month, beachgoers in Fort Meyers, Florida, discovered the carcass of a female bottlenose dolphin with a gruesome cut over its right eye.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration examined the creature and discovered that it had been impaled by a spear-like item.

Officials stated that the damage occurred while the animal was still alive.

According to the agency, the dolphin was probably unlawfully fed in a semi-upright posture before to being stabbed.

According to the NOAA, “based on the form, size, and features of the wound, it is assumed that the dolphin was impaled while in the begging posture.” “Begging is not a normal dolphin behavior and is commonly related with illicit feeding.

Officials captured a disturbing image of the dead beast, which revealed a massive incision on the right side of its cranium.

Under the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act, it is illegal to harm or kill wild dolphins, and violators risk up to a year in prison and a $100,000 fine.

Local law enforcement is conducting an investigation into the event.

Officials have stated that violence towards dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico continues to be a source of concern.

The stabbing in Fort Myers is the 27th such incident since 2002, according to the NOAA.
