Russia announced on Wednesday that it has successfully launched the first test of its Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, a new addition to its nuclear arsenal that President Vladimir Putin claims will give Moscow’s adversaries pause.
The missile was launched from Plesetsk in the country’s northwest and hit targets in the Kamchatka peninsula in the Far East, according to Putin, who was notified by the military on television.
The Sarmat has been in development for years, thus its test-launch comes at a time when geopolitical tensions are at an all-time high due to Russia’s eight-week-old war in Ukraine.
“The new complex possesses the highest tactical and technical capabilities and is capable of defeating any modern anti-missile defense systems. There are no equivalents in the world, and there won’t be for a long time “Putin stated the following.
“This genuinely unique weapon will boost our armed forces’ fighting potential, dependably safeguard Russia’s security from external threats, and provide food for thought for those who try to attack our country in the midst of frenzied threatening rhetoric.”
According to the US Congressional Research Service, the Sarmat is a new heavy Intercontinental Ballistic Missile that Russia plans to deploy with 10 or more warheads on each missile.
