Texas school shooting: Officials reported a shooter opened fire at an elementary school west of San Antonio, Texas, killing eighteen children and three adults.

The attack took place at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, a little Hill Country community of just over 16,000 people. Following the shooting, the victims were taken to hospitals in Uvalde and San Antonio. The elementary school, which serves pupils in grades two through four, has a Hispanic population of 90%.

“Texans across the state are grieving for the victims of this senseless crime and for the community of Uvalde,” governor Greg Abbott said in a statement. “Cecilia and I mourn this horrific loss and we urge all Texans to come together to show our unwavering support to all who are suffering.”

The alleged shooter, Salvador Ramos, 18, is dead, according to Mr Abbott. He said that it is “believed that responding officers killed him.”

Mr Ramos was a student at Uvalde High School, according to reports. Mr Abbott further stated that he shot his grandmother on Tuesday morning before entering the primary school with a handgun and maybe a rifle.

Uvalde Memorial Hospital informed ABC News that two children had died from alleged gunshot wounds before Mr Abbott addressed the media. A further 13 pupils were being treated in the emergency room, according to the hospital, and a 45-year-old was hospitalised after being grazed by one of the bullets.

A toddler and an adult were injured in the incident, according to University Health in San Antonio.

Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin did not confirm the number of deaths, but he did tell ABC News that “this is a very bad situation.”

“There is an active shooter at Robb Elementary. “Law enforcement is on the scene,” the school said in a Facebook post early Tuesday. “Your cooperation is needed at this time by not visiting the campus.”

Parents in Uvalde have been told not to bring their children to school, but instead to meet them at the Uvalde Civic Center for “reunification.”

“Parents are asked to pick up students at the regular dismissal times at the child’s campus,” the school wrote in a Facebook post. “There will be no bus transportation. Officers will be on site to escort students to the parents cars. Parents please be patient as lines will be long.”
