Mercedes-Benz said on Thursday that an exceedingly rare automobile from its company collection was auctioned for 135 million euros ($143 million).

The amount paid by a private collector for the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé with its iconic gullwing doors earlier this month, according to the firm, makes it the most costly automobile of all time. The assertion could not be confirmed independently.

Mercedes-Benz stated that the funds will be used to establish a scholarship fund for young people interested in learning about and researching environmental science and decarbonization. Climate change is mostly blamed on the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, which is created when fossil fuels are burned.

The automobile was named after the company’s then-chief engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut and was one of just two prototypes made in 1955.

“We would like to encourage a new generation to follow in Rudolf Uhlenhaut’s innovative footsteps and develop amazing new technologies, particularly those that support the critical goal of decarbonization and resource preservation,” the CEO of Mercedes-Benz Group, Ola Kallenius, said.

The firm claims to have 1,100 automobiles going back to 1886 in its collection.
