Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban has chastised the European Commission for its handling of a possible Russian oil embargo, calling it “irresponsible.”

He argued that the Commission, which develops rules for member states, had failed to adequately negotiate the embargo with member countries as he arrived at a summit of EU leaders in Brussels.

He said the oil ban came “out of nowhere,” refusing to answer concerns about Hungary’s energy security.

“Energy is a major concern.”

“First, we must find solutions, and then we must impose punishment,” he stated.

He did, however, sound optimistic about a potential solution that would exempt pipeline oil from any restriction, calling it “not awful.”

“It’s a good approach but we need a guarantee that in the case of an accident with the pipeline… we have to have the right to get Russian oil from other sources,” he added.
