Debt-ridden Sri Lanka named nine new cabinet members on Friday in an effort to maintain stability until the island nation’s greatest economic crisis since independence is resolved.
Former minister Nimal Siripala de Silva of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), as well as independent MPs Susil Premajayantha, Wijayadasa Rajapaksha, and Tiran Alles, were among the nine new ministers sworn in by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Friday. Last week, four new ministers were sworn in.
According to media sources, the cabinet would be restricted to 25 members, including the President and Prime Minister.
According to newsfirst.lk, Nimal Siripala De Silva Ports has been named minister of naval and aviation services; Susil Premajayantha as minister of education; Keheliya Rambukwella as health minister; and Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe as minister of justice, prison affairs, and constitutional reforms.
Harin Fernando has been named Minister of Tourism and Land, Ramesh Pathirana has been appointed Minister of Plantation Industries, Manusha Nanayakkara has been appointed Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment, Nalin Fernando has been appointed Minister of Trade, Commerce, and Food Security, and Tiran Alles has been appointed Minister of Public Security, according to the report.
Sri Lanka is in the midst of its biggest economic crisis since its 1948 independence from the United Kingdom.
Since April 9, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets across Sri Lanka, calling for President Rajapaksa’s resignation as the administration runs out of funds for critical imports.
