Hungary warned on Wednesday that a potential EU embargo on Russian oil would provide no assurance of energy security.

In a statement to AFP, the Hungarian government’s press office stated, “We don’t see any plan or guarantee on how even a transition could be managed on the basis of the current proposals, and what would guarantee Hungary’s energy security.”

The press office did not immediately respond when asked if this meant Hungary had flatly rejected the EU plan.

According to a document seen by AFP, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s proposal requested that Hungary and Slovakia, which are both heavily reliant on Russian oil, be granted extra time to comply with the prohibition.

Ambassadors from the EU’s 27 member countries will gather on Wednesday to review her idea, which will require unanimous agreement before entering into force.

Hungary’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, who has developed close connections with Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent years, has so far ruled out backing any import restrictions, citing the central European country’s reliance on Russian gas and oil.
