A former top prosecutor who is being pursued by the Taliban claims, fears for his life.

It is because the UK’s resettlement scheme fails to help Afghans who are in grave danger.

The prosecutor has been in immigration limbo in Pakistan for almost five months and has been unable to arrange a relocation to the UK despite having British family connections.

The former head of prosecution for a 500,000-person Afghan province felt “constantly afraid” that Taliban networks in Pakistan would discover him.

He was a victim of car-bomb attack.

His home in Afghanistan has also been searched by the Taliban.

He has also received several letters threatening his life.

The Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme (ACRS) was created by the Home Office to provide safe haven for “vulnerable persons and members of minority groups in danger.

It was to cater Afghans who have “stood up for ideals such as democracy, women’s rights… and rule of law.”

However, places will be filled first by those already in the UK, leaving few options for at-risk Afghans.

Charities have expressed concern that the scheme “still offers little or no capacity for people most at risk in Afghanistan or those who have fled into neighboring countries to get to the UK in a safe fashion.”

The prosecutor said, “Can you imagine all the prisoners that I had put in prison for their crimes escaping. All the jails were breaking down and everyone was coming out by themselves. I was scared to death.”

He told, “Dealing with the Taliban is a nightmare for all the attorneys.”

“It was unusual for the head of a province to speak to them directly but I wanted to see if they had regrets for what they did, as many of them are young.”

“But it was very difficult because some of them were the most dangerous people – who are proud of killing women and killing children – and they said they would never regret their crimes.”

“I had worked for many years serving the people of Afghanistan and it was heartbreaking to see the Taliban takeover. I couldn’t believe what had happened. This was not only the failing of Afghanistan but the failing of our people,” he added.
