The Russians aim to take Severodonetsk so that “this may be portrayed to the Russian people as a big victory,” according to a top official in eastern Ukraine.

“They obviously want Severodonetsk since it is the city — the regional hub. Of course, this may be marketed to the public as a great win “Serhiy Hayday, the leader of the regional military administration in Luhansk, stated on Telegram.

Severodonetsk, an important industrial hub in eastern Ukraine, has been pounded for weeks by Russian soldiers and is mostly damaged. However, Ukrainian forces are still stationed in and around the city.

“And of course another goal is to encircle our military and try to cut the road to Bakhmut where Popasna is. These are the main two directions,” he said.

Hayday denied Russian claims that they’d taken the town of Rubizhne in the same area.

“In fact they can’t move any further and our National Guard is still there and repulses all enemy attacks,” Hayday said.
