The eight-year-old was immediately sought after by German police, but they were unsuccessful in their efforts.
However, in the early hours of Saturday, June 25, a passerby, age 43, overheard a faint whimpering sound coming from a storm drain.
He was promptly sent home by police.
Joe was saved and transferred to the hospital, where he is currently recuperating from his experience.
We were able to locate Joe in a sewer system today thanks to a tip from the public, according to police chief Johann Kuehme.
We can all exhale with relief because the most important thing is that he is alive and was transferred right away to a hospital where he is in wonderful care.
In addition to participating in the search operations over the previous few days, a large number of police officers from numerous police agencies across the nation also gave their spare time to help find Joe.
Local search parties and a hunting group helped with the search.
A manhole cover was raised and the youngster was retrieved after being located.
He appeared “unharmed,” according to a local witness, but local police spokesperson Stephan Klatte said the youngster was “hypothermic, but responsive.”
“Our job is to figure out how Joe got into the sewage hole,” he continued.
“The tremendous commitment over the previous three days has really impressed me.
“I would want to thank all the full-time and volunteer employees and people who worked tirelessly, until late at night, to discover a missing child. They did everything with sensitivity and a high level of personal devotion.
