The collapse of a building in the Egyptian capital of Cairo early on Friday morning resulted in the deaths of six individuals, according to authorities as rescuers combed through the debris. Not readily understood was the cause of the collapse.

In a statement made by the Interior Ministry, the city’s deputy governor, Ibrahim Abdel-Hadi, stated that a family of six was believed to have been inside the six-story building in the El-Waily district when it collapsed early in the morning.

People were also instructed to evacuate the nearby structures due to structural concerns.

On Friday afternoon, bulldozers and excavators were still lifting debris in the area.

An adjoining building had lost a portion of a wall, exposing an apartment’s interior.

After not doing much to stop illegal building for decades, the government has tried to crack down on it in recent years.
