DAKAR – In the early hours of Thursday morning, attackers invaded an industrial gold mine in northern Burkina Faso, murdering one soldier and one civilian, according to the site’s owner.

According to an officer who answered the phone at Nere Mining, which owns Karma, three or four soldiers were also wounded in the assault, which occurred around 4:30 a.m. (0430 GMT). Before he could say his name, the phone was cut off.

He stated that it was unclear who was to blame right away. For than a decade, militants affiliated to al Qaeda and Islamic State have waged an insurgency in northern Burkina Faso, carrying out strikes on a regular basis.

Convoys travelling to and from the region’s gold mines have been targeted by several of them. The deadliest was a 2019 ambush on buses carrying employees of Canadian corporation Semafo, which killed 39 people.

Mine-related attacks, on the other hand, have been extremely rare.

According to a diplomatic source, three persons were murdered and ten others were injured at the mine, eight of them were critically injured. Around 200 unknown attackers arrived soon before daybreak, according to a Burkinabe security source. According to two other industry sources, the attack was eventually thwarted.

One of the whistleblowers provided a video of multiple burnt-out trucks inside the mine site. The video’s validity could not be verified by Reuters.

After Russia’s Nordgold shut down its mine in the north due to deteriorating security, the head of Burkina Faso’s mines chamber indicated in April that extra measures will be implemented to protect gold projects in the north.

In March, Nere Mining, a Burkina Faso-based partnership, paid $25 million for Endeavour Mining’s 90 percent ownership in the Karma mine. In 2021, it produced roughly 88,000 ounces of gold.
