Tesla cars will be prohibited from entering the Chinese seaside district of Beidaihe, where the Communist Party customarily meets a secret annual summer session to debate significant policy decisions and personnel changes, starting on July 1.
This year, in the lead-up to the 20th Communist Party Congress in Beijing, a coastal town in Heibei province will host a 15-day retreat of the top present and former leaders of the Communist Party of China, including President Xi Jinping and former leaders Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao.

Tesla owners have been instructed to make an undertaking, which an Indian news agency has seen and reads “I ___ promise to undertake that from 1.7.2022 to 31.8.2022 I would not drive the car with plate number ___ and enter Beidhaihe district or drive the car inside Beidaihe district…”
The restrictions on Tesla vehicles in Beidaihe, which the International news agency also reported, came weeks after they were banned from certain highways in Chengdu at the beginning of this month when president Xi Jinping visited the city.
Importantly, the Beidhaihe limits throw a new perspective on the upcoming 20th meeting of the Communist Party Congress in October of this year, at which ‘eternal leader’ Xi Jinping will be ‘elected’ to another five-year term and solidify his absolute control within the government.
