BRIDGEPORT, California: A wildfire that broke out in Northern California on Tuesday prompted the evacuation of over 500 buildings and other structures, according to authorities.

The Rice Fire began around 2:00 p.m. near the Yuba River in Nevada County and grew to more than 202 hectares by dark, as per California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Unit Chief Brian Estes.

Estes said that the fires were also a threat to power lines, the infrastructure for getting water to people, and a state park.

The rural area is located in the Sierra Nevada, northeast of Sacramento and roughly midway between the state capital and the Nevada state line.

Authorities have stated that the fire began in a smouldering structure and spread to neighbouring dry grass.

However, during an evening press conference, Estes stated that he was unable to confirm rumours that some structures had been demolished.

Shannan Moon, the sheriff of the county, said that about 350 homes and other buildings were being told to leave.

The fire was fought from the ground and the air, with planes dropping dozens of drops of water and fire retardant.
