This amazing emergency landing on a busy highway following an engine failure was achieved by a brave pilot.
According to the local county sheriff’s office, the aircraft, which is thought to be an Aero Commander 100, touched down on US Route 19 in North Carolina at around 11.45am on Sunday.
According to local media accounts, there were no injuries recorded.
The aircraft’s engine failed mid-flight, forcing the pilot, Florida resident Vincent Fraser, to make an emergency landing.
He claimed that his father-in-law was present as the two were travelling home after inspecting a house close to Fontana Lake.
“I started going through my checklist and I was able to get the aeroplane to restart and type of fly for 3 to 5 seconds, but she would fly for only that long before coming back down and starting to sink again,” Vincent told WMYA.
Intriguing video captures the single-engine plane touching down on the highway as Vincent scrambles to find a narrow space between the vehicles to prevent a fatal collision.
Since it was the only patch of flat land in the mountainous region, the main road turned out to be the finest landing location.
By the grace of God, he added, “I looked to my left, and, you know, it’s just all valleys and mountains, and, you know, there’s a road – that road that I landed on just right there, perfectly lined up.”
Less than 100 hours of flight time later, in October, Vincent finally obtained his private pilot’s licence.
At the moment of the emergency landing, motorists originally called 911 to report a plane crash, according to the authorities.
“The call came in as a plane accident, so we’re just extremely grateful that it wasn’t, because the circumstances would have been very different,” Swain County Sheriff Curtis Cochran told The Smoky Mountains Times.
According to him, “there was one car coming,” and the pilot “put the plane down in oncoming traffic barely over the power lines.”
The officer stated that the event is currently under investigation by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The shocking emergency landing was captured on camera, and the video quickly went viral online.
Just trying to fathom what it would be like to be driving along minding my own business,” one viewer commented.
Another wrote: “Holy Hell. Can you imagine being a driver?”
A third said: “Jeeeeeez, they BARELY missed the power lines at the end.”
