According to a Ukrainian official, Ukraine has asked Turkey to detain and arrest the Russian-flagged cargo ship Zhibek Zholy, which is carrying a cargo of Ukrainian grain taken from the Russian-occupied port of Berdyansk.

A representative of the Ukrainian foreign ministry claimed that the 7,146 dwt Zhibek Zholy had loaded the first cargo of approximately 4,500 tonnes of grain from Berdyansk, which the official claimed belonged to Ukraine, based on information obtained from the nation’s marine authority.

Ukraine’s prosecutor general’s office separately stated in a letter dated June 30 to Turkey’s justice ministry that the Zhibek Zholy was involved in the “illegal export of Ukrainian grain” from Berdyansk and was travelling to Karasu, Turkey, with 7,000 tonnes of cargo, which is a larger cargo than was stated by the Turkish ministry.

In the letter, the office of the Ukrainian prosecutor general urged Turkey to “conduct an inspection of this sea vessel, seize samples of grain for forensic examination, and demand information on the location of such grain.” It also stated that Ukraine was prepared to work with Turkish authorities to conduct an investigation.

According to a Russian-installed official in the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia region of Ukraine, the first cargo ship has finally departed Berdyansk port after a several-month delay without mentioning the Zhibek Zholy.

An inquiry for comment on Friday did not immediately receive a response from Moscow-based Kremlin officials.

A request for comment regarding the arrival of the Zhibek Zholy was not immediately answered by the Turkish foreign ministry.
