Around 05:40 local time, the incident occurred as they were en route to Medjugorje, a Catholic shrine in Bosnia (04:50 GMT).
North-east of Zagreb, between Jarek Bisaski and Podvorec, the bus left the A4 highway.
11 deaths were first stated to have occurred. Later, a second individual passed away in a hospital, according to Croatia’s interior minister, Davor Bozinovic.
According to Mr. Bozinovic, some of the injured passengers are fighting for their lives.
Andrej Plenkovi, the prime minister of Croatia, sent his sympathies to the relatives of the victims and said in a tweet that the emergency services were doing everything they could to assist.
Following the event, two Polish ministers are visiting Croatia, according to local media.
