Shaquille O’Neal’s Support Australian Indigenous vote
Shaquille O’Neal, a legend in American basketball, has expressed his support for the Australian Indigenous cause.
At a press conference, he added, “Whatever you need from me, just let me know,” together with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
The center-left administration of Mr. Albanese seeks to amend the constitution and provide Indigenous people representation in parliament through a referendum.
Following his election victory in May, he made a promise in his victory address.
The former professional basketball player, who is currently on a speaking tour in Australia, is well qualified, according to Mr. Albanese, to mobilize popular support for his government’s initiative to boost the number of Indigenous voices in parliament.
A plan to establish an Indigenous peoples’ representational body in parliament was rejected by the Australian government in 2017.
However, Mr. Albanese’s leadership is attempting to increase representation and rally popular support for the proposal through sports personalities.
A permanent Indigenous advisory body to the federal parliament would be established if his government’s “Indigenous Voice to Parliament” idea is accepted.
We are aware of Mr. O’Neal’s extensive activity in the United States on behalf of social justice and uplifting those who are marginalized, especially through sporting organizations, said Mr. Albanese.
According to him, his administration sought to garner “the broadest possible support” and work with persons who could relate to all societal groups, especially young people.
“Shaq has that record,” Mr. Albanese added, praising him for bringing people together from different backgrounds and “recognizing that Australian history didn’t begin in 1788”.
O’Neal requested to be engaged, according to Indigenous Affairs Minister Linda Burney, who also addressed at the press conference. She also called the goal of transformation “a wonderful task.”
“I’m here in your country. Whatever you need from me, just let me know,” the four-time NBA champion stated.
Thank you and God bless you, and please remember that Shaq is a big fan of Australia. Okay, I’ll talk to you shortly.
After the national referendum, specifics on the government’s plans to increase the representation of Indigenous voices in parliament will be made public.
