Mount Semeru, which is located about 640 kilometres (400 miles) southeast of Jakarta, started erupting at 2:46 a.m. local time on Sunday (2:46 p.m. ET on Saturday). Villages nearby were shown in videos posted by BNPB to be covered in grey ash.
The highest Level 4 of notice for volcanic activity, according to a statement from Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, PVMBG.

The organisation advised locals to keep at least 17 kilometres (10.5 miles) away from the centre of Semeru’s eruption, noting that volcanic ash has already travelled as far as 12 kilometres (7.4 miles).

The eruption’s plume, according to Japan’s Meteorological Agency, rose 15 kilometres (about 49,200 feet) into the air. In a statement released on Sunday, the agency said that the eruption had not caused a tsunami.

Mount Semeru is the tallest volcano in Java and one of its most active ones, standing at 3,676 metres (12,060 ft).

When it erupted last year, more than 50 people were murdered and many more were left homeless.
PVMBG president Hendra Gunawan said the organisation anticipated the eruption on Sunday might produce more magma than the outburst in 2021.

Because of this, he explained, “Semeru’s heated clouds could extend further (this year), and there are many dwellings at that distance.”
Following a string of earthquakes on the west of the island, including one that killed more than 300 people last month, an eruption in East Java occurred on Sunday.

A shallow 5.6 magnitude earthquake that killed many people in Cianjur, West Java, occurred in November. A far stronger earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 occurred on Saturday near the town of Garut, which caused people to flee from their homes but did little other damage.
