The term won by a wide margin with 318,956 votes, accounting for 93% of the total, showing that thousands of people were able to break out of goblin mode to cast their ballots.

So what precisely does goblin mode mean?

The Oxford English Dictionary is published by Oxford University Press. According to Oxford University Press, it is a slang term frequently used in the idioms “to go goblin mode” and “I am in goblin mode.”

The article continued by defining it as “a kind of behaviour that is unrepentantly self-indulgent, sluggish, slovenly, or selfish, generally in a way that contradicts social standards or expectations.”

The phrase first appeared online in 2009, but it gained popularity earlier this year as a result of a made-up incident involving actress and model Julia Fox and a well-liked Reddit post describing someone acting in a goblin-like manner.

The phrase kept expanding as people realised they did not want to return to the way life was before Covid limitations loosened.

It sparked a campaign to choose it as the Oxford Word of the Year, with the PC Gamer magazine urging readers to “put aside our petty disputes and vote for ‘goblin mode’ over’metaverse’ because ‘goblin mode rules’.”

Given that many of us occasionally experience goblin-like feelings, it may be difficult to challenge such rationale.

In a year that organisers dubbed “more divided than ever,” the public has for the first time selected the word of the year.

According to Oxford Languages president Casper Grathwohl, individuals have been embracing their inner goblin.

Added him: “Although we had hoped that people would enjoy participating, we were completely unprepared for the level of interest in the campaign that was shown.

“The effectiveness of the reaction demonstrates how crucial a part of comprehending who we are and how to process what’s going on in the world around us is our vocabulary.

“Given the year we’ve just had, “goblin mode” speaks to those of us who are currently experiencing some level of overwhelm. Recognizing that we’re not always the polished, idealised versions of ourselves that we’re urged to display on our Instagram and TikTok accounts is a relief.”

#IStandWith received 8,639 votes, finishing second behind metaverse with 14,484 votes.

Susie Dent, a TV word expert, declared that she was supporting #IStandWith.

Vax, which echoed the interest in vaccines after a coronavirus vaccine was developed, was last year’s Word of the Year.
