At least 13 local police officers died in brazen attack in Mexico
A group of assailants carried out a deadly attack, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 13 local police officers in southern Mexico’s Guerrero state on Monday.
This incident is the latest in a series of audacious assaults in a region where criminal gangs have been competing for dominance in the drug trade.
Among the casualties is the local security chief of the town of Coyuca de Benitez, as disclosed by the anonymous source. Coyuca de Benitez is situated to the west of the well-known beach resort of Acapulco.
Subsequently, state officials issued a statement, assuring that security measures in the area would be bolstered, with the involvement of navy and National Guard agents.
However, the statement did not specify the exact number of police officers who lost their lives in the attack. The region in and around Coyuca de Benitez has a notable presence of organized crime.
The officers had been dispatched to respond to a report of alleged gunfire in the area before the ambush, as per the source.
Violence in Guerrero has seen a significant escalation over the past decade, driven by various criminal groups vying for control of the profitable opium poppy trade and other smuggling routes.
Official data indicates that during the first nine months of this year, nearly 1,100 individuals have lost their lives in the state, marking a nearly 25% increase compared to the previous year.
