US Marine Corps Lt Gen James Glynn, the former commander of Marine troops Special activities Command, is scheduled to advise the Israeli troops on their present activities as the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) get ready for a ground invasion of Gaza.

The deputy commandant for Manpower and Reserve Affairs, Glynn, can provide guidance on the “big picture” of the Gaza battle, according to the US official who first broke the story.

With decades of experience, including battle in Iraq and serving as the commander of the Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC).

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby declined to acknowledge Glynn’s position when asked if Glynn would be advising the Israelis.

Rather, Kirby informed reporters on Monday that “a few relevant military officers” with “the kind of experience that we believe is appropriate to the sorts of operations that Israel is conducting and may conduct in the future” had been dispatched by the Biden administration to Israel.

According to Kirby, these officials would also pose “the same hard questions that we’ve been posing to our Israeli counterparts since the beginning.”

According to the US official, among the concerns raised were how Israel intended to prevent civilian casualties, which have increased dramatically as the IDF attacks the coastal enclave.

Since October 7, when Hamas attacked Israel, Glynn is not the highest senior US officer to visit the country.

General Michael “Erik” Kurilla, the commander of US Central Command, visited Israel last week and had meetings with key Israeli military figures.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin deployed special operations personnel to help Israel with intelligence and hostage rescue missions, but Glynn has a different duty. When Glynn arrived and how long he is anticipated to stay are unknown.

The US has cautioned against a protracted occupation of Gaza, even as it and its allies have encouraged Israel to be explicit about its objectives in Gaza if and when it starts a bigger offensive targeting coastal territory.

The US has also made preventing civilian casualties a top priority. US officials think it will be challenging to completely eliminate Hamas and do not yet fully understand Israel’s aims in Gaza.

They have not made any attempt to stop Israel from deploying ground soldiers in Gaza in private conversations while Israeli authorities have officially said that their aim is to destroy Hamas and its infrastructure.

In order to undermine Hamas and prevent a protracted occupation of the Gaza Strip, the US emphasizes the necessity of having specific goals.

The Israeli military declared that it was getting ready for “unrelenting attacks” to destroy Hamas, but former US President Barack Obama issued a dire warning, saying that “any Israeli military strategy that ignores the human costs could ultimately backfire.”

The Gaza Health Ministry reports that in two weeks of Israeli airstrikes in retaliation for Hamas’ October 7 offensive on southern Israel, in which the group killed over 1,400 Israelis, over 5,000 Palestinians—including over 2,000 children—have been martyred.

Israel launched aerial bombardments of hundreds of locations in Gaza while its soldiers engaged in combat with Hamas militants during incursions into the embattled Palestinian territory, where civilians have been detained on Monday.

Former US President Barack Obama advised Israel not to alienate generations of Palestinians by inflicting so many civilian casualties in reprisal against Hamas, in a rare reflection on a foreign policy conundrum.

Obama said in a statement posted on social media, “Any Israeli military strategy that ignores the human costs could ultimately backfire. Already, thousands of Palestinians have been killed in the bombing of Gaza, many of them children. Hundreds of thousands have been forced from their homes.”

It was not immediately clear whether Obama coordinated his statement with Biden, who was his vice president. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“The Israeli government’s decision to cut off food, water and electricity to a captive civilian population threatens not only to worsen a growing humanitarian crisis.”

He added, “It could further harden Palestinian attitudes for generations, erode global support for Israel, play into the hands of Israel’s enemies, and undermine long-term efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region.”
