Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. remains steadfast in rejecting an international investigation into the drug war led by former leader Rodrigo Duterte.

This underscores his commitment to preserving unity within the ruling alliance.

“It’s not right for outsiders to tell us who to investigate, who the police will arrest or detain,” Marcos told reporters Friday. He was reacting to a proposal in the House of Representatives for the government to cooperate with the International Criminal Court’s investigation on Duterte’s anti-drug campaign that killed thousands.

Earlier this week, Marcos downplayed speculation about divisions within the alliance that contributed to his and Vice President Sara Duterte’s resounding victories in last year’s elections.

However, in recent months, the vice president has distanced herself from Marcos’s cousin and key ally, House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

In a statement on Thursday, the vice president and daughter of the former leader asserted that permitting international scrutiny of her father is “clearly unconstitutional” and “undermines our legal institutions.”

Despite previously attempting to sever ties with the international court earlier this year, Marcos announced on Friday that his administration is currently evaluating whether it should reengage with the tribunal.
