An animated crowd gathered to protest a meeting of cross-Pacific political leaders, addressing a diverse array of issues on a sunlit Sunday in San Francisco.

Notably, demonstrators called for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict. The focal point of the protest was the plaza in front of San Francisco’s ferry building, symbolizing the city’s gateway, adorned with banners opposing the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.

The participants advocated for economic and environmental change, with Palestinian flags waving prominently.

The police braced for potential confrontations on Wednesday, coinciding with the second meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping since Biden assumed office in January 2021 anticipating multiple protests throughout the week at APEC.

Voices from the protest emphasized discontent with the allocation of funds for the leadership summit. Roberto Ruiz, a 53-year-old musician at the ferry plaza, expressed frustration, stating that the resources should have been directed to aid the impoverished population struggling with homelessness.

Data from a 2022 count suggested that as many as 3,000 people may be living on the streets in San Francisco.

Against the backdrop of a city recovering slowly from the COVID-19 pandemic, with major retailers abandoning Market Street and reduced tourism, protesters conveyed their messages.

A 21-year-old student, Sarah R, conveyed her support for Palestinians, characterizing their situation as a “genocide” in the face of retaliatory actions following an October 7 attack by Hamas militants on Israel.

Marty Brewer, a 56-year-old geoscience engineer, underscored the urgency of addressing the climate crisis, emphasizing the current failure to respond effectively to the emergency.
