School Strike 4 Climate: Australian kids call for climate action with sick note
Thousands of Australian students have participated in School Strike 4 Climate rallies, backed by a “sick note” from “climate doctors.”
The note, signed by three prominent scientists, recommends students take a sick day to protest for a sick planet. The students are demanding greater climate action amid the country facing recurring natural disasters.
Some education officials have stated that schools will not accept the note. The letter, expressing increased anxiety and stress due to climate change impacts, is not a formal medical certificate.
Students across nine cities, including Melbourne and Sydney, attended the protests, criticizing the government’s response and its approval of new coal and gas projects.
Australia has faced international criticism for its slow response to climate change threats. While the current government promised greater climate action, experts argue that Australia is not keeping pace with key allies like the US and the UK.
The School Strike 4 Climate movement, originating in Sweden, calls for political action on climate change and organizes student strikes globally.
The recent rallies are the largest in Australia since 2019, with participants emphasizing the need for urgent environmental protection reforms.
