A man in South Korea has been apprehended for a late-night assault on a female convenience store employee, as he mistakenly believed she was a feminist.

Surveillance footage captured the man in his 20s entering a store in the southeastern city of Jinju past midnight, where he proceeded to physically attack the woman by punching and kicking her.

He also targeted another customer in his 50s who attempted to intervene during the assault.

According to the police, the assailant attacked the woman because she had short hair, which led him to assume she was a feminist.

He reportedly told her, “Since you have short hair, you must be a feminist. I’m a male chauvinist, and I think feminists deserve to be assaulted,” as cited by the Korea Herald newspaper.

The attack continued until law enforcement arrived at the scene and put an end to it. Authorities noted that the man was intoxicated at the time of the incident and had previously been diagnosed and treated for schizophrenia.

South Korea is often ranked as one of the worst economically advanced countries for women in the workforce, displaying poor gender equality.

Anti-feminist sentiments have been on the rise in recent years, particularly among young men who perceive themselves as being disadvantaged by what they see as reverse discrimination.

As a result of the attack that occurred on Friday, the woman in her 20s sustained severe ear and ligament injuries, though her condition was not life-threatening. The customer who intervened also suffered facial and shoulder fractures after being struck with a chair.

The police applied for a warrant to keep the alleged perpetrator in custody on Sunday.

Notably, women with short, cropped hair have been targeted in past attacks in South Korea, where certain misogynistic individuals associate this hairstyle with feminism, a term that has been erroneously equated with man-hating.

A viral solidarity campaign emerged where women proudly displayed their short hairstyles in support of an Olympic archer who faced an online barrage of abuse for her short hair, despite winning multiple gold medals at the Tokyo Games in 2021.
