On Sunday, Ukraine and Russia engaged in a drone swarm conflict, escalating their attacks. The Russian assault reportedly led to one fatality in Odesa, while Ukraine targeted a Russian military airfield.

Ukraine’s air force claimed to have destroyed 20 drones and a cruise missile launched by Russia overnight.

Nine of the downed drones caused debris to fall over the southern Odesa region. This resulted in a residential house fire and one fatality.

In response, the Russian defense ministry stated on social media that its air defense systems intercepted or destroyed a total of 35 drones launched by Ukraine over the Lipetsk, Volgograd, and Rostov regions. The statement did not specify the targets or mention any resulting damage.

According to Ukrainska Pravda, citing unnamed sources, the Kyiv attack reportedly focused on the Russian Morozovsk airfield in the Rostov region.

This operation was purportedly a joint effort involving the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the Armed Forces.

Vasily Golubev, the governor of Russia’s Rostov region, which shares a border with Ukraine in the southwest, announced on the Telegram messaging app that air defense forces successfully repelled a substantial drone attack in the Morozovsk and Kamensk areas.

Golubev stated that most of the attacking drones were destroyed, but several Russian military bloggers claimed that one bomber at the Morozovsk air base suffered minor damage.

The Morozovsk air base houses Russia’s 559th Bomber Aviation Regiment, equipped with the country’s advanced medium-range Su-34 bombers, as per Russian state media.

Despite Moscow and Kyiv denying targeting civilians in the ongoing conflict, both sides have conducted numerous strikes on crucial military infrastructure.

The events on Sunday followed Ukraine’s report that its air defense systems had downed 30 drones launched by Russia across 11 regions on Saturday. In response, Russia claimed on Friday to have shot down 26 Ukrainian drones over Crimea, the peninsula annexed by Moscow from Ukraine in 2014.
