In a devastating incident on Wednesday, a Russian Ilyushin-76 military transport plane crashed in the southern Belgorod region, near the border with Ukraine, claiming the lives of at least 65 individuals. The Russian Ministry of Defence confirmed the casualties, revealing that among those on board were Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) slated for an exchange.

The crash occurred in the Korochansky district, northeast of Belgorod city, and was marked by a fiery explosion as captured in a video shared on a Telegram channel linked to Russian security services. The footage depicted the large aircraft plummeting towards the ground before erupting into a fireball.

Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov of the Belgorod region acknowledged the incident, describing it as an “unspecified incident” and announcing his intention to inspect the crash site. He revealed that investigators and emergency workers were already on the scene, although no immediate information on the cause of the crash was available.

According to RIA Novosti, the Russian news agency, the defense ministry stated that the ill-fated plane was carrying 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war, in addition to six crew members and three other individuals. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the region, further complicating the already tense relations between Russia and Ukraine.

The Ilyushin-76, a military transport aircraft with a normal crew of five people, is designed for airlifting troops, cargo, military equipment, and weapons. Capable of carrying up to 90 passengers, it is a crucial component of military logistics.

Belgorod region, which shares a border with Ukraine, has faced repeated attacks in recent months, including a missile strike in December that resulted in the loss of 25 lives. The crash of the Ilyushin-76 marks another dark chapter in the ongoing conflict, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the incident and the implications for the delicate geopolitical situation in the region.
