Officials have reported discovering the bodies of eight Chinese nationals on a beach in the Mexican state of Oaxaca after their boat capsized. The bodies were found on Friday along a route frequently used by illegal migrants attempting to reach the United States. A Mexican operator was ferrying the seven women and one man on a boat that departed from Chiapas state, which shares a border with Guatemala, on Thursday.

One other person survived the incident, and it remains unclear what happened to the boat’s driver.

The prosecutor’s office in Oaxaca reported discovering the bodies near a beach in the town of Playa Vicente. They stated that they are investigating the cause of the accident and collaborating with the Chinese embassy in Mexico to identify the victims.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of migrants attempting to enter the US from Mexico.

Since 2021, more than 6.3 million migrants have entered the US illegally.

The number started to rise in 2018, primarily driven by Central Americans fleeing a series of complex crises, including gang violence, poverty, political repression, and natural disasters.

Among migrants from outside the Americas, the greatest increase is observed in those coming from China, as a growing number seek to escape a faltering economy and political repression in their home country.

Last year, authorities detained more than 37,000 Chinese nationals at the US-Mexico border, a figure approximately 50 times higher than that from two years ago.

The rising number of migrants has overwhelmed Mexico’s immigration facilities and shelters.

The US has exerted increased pressure on the Mexican government to combat the flow of illegal immigration as it takes center stage in the upcoming US presidential election campaign.
