Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi died on Monday in a helicopter crash in a mountainous area near the Azerbaijan border, according to officials and state media.
The charred remains of the helicopter carrying Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, which crashed on Sunday, were discovered early Monday following an overnight search in blizzard conditions.
“President Raisi, the foreign minister and all the passengers in the helicopter were killed in the crash,” a senior Iranian official told Reuters, asking not to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter.
The helicopter crash took place 100 km away from Tabriz, in which East Azerbaijan Governor Malik Rahmati, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei’s spokesman Ayatollah Ali Al-Hashim, flight crew, security chief and bodyguard were also killed.
Earlier, the head of the Iranian Red Crescent said that no signs of life were found at the place where President Raisi’s helicopter crashed.

It should be noted that according to the Iranian constitution, the first vice president Mohammad Mokhbar will take over as the acting president and voting will be held in 50 days to elect a new president.
